Beautiful Mountain Views

Calm, misty mornings

This property was chosen as Lowe's photo shoot for their outdoor furniture catalogue. It is now available as a vacation rental on a limited basis. It is a stunning spot for family vacations or a personal respite from the world. We know of nothing else in the area that even comes close to the quality and size of this amazing home.

This lovely home was designed in the style of the summer Adirondack cottages of upstate New York, with flowing grand rooms. The grandeur is reminiscent of the Biltmore house and Richmond Hill Inn, but with the down-home comfort of the Ponderosa. Built using many local materials, it has beautiful features such as walnut, oak, and granite flooring, antique paneling from England and 200 year old stain-glassed windows from one of the huge Rhode Island Seaport mansions, post and beam construction, soaring ceilings with numerous fireplaces, and woodwork and stonework that took master craftsmen years to complete. You will luxuriate in the large, comfortable furniture, many of which are antiques, and wander through the sun-room, library, living room, great room, gaming room, huge kitchen and dining room, and 5 bedrooms. There are also numerous terraces, balconies, and porches to enjoy,
plus a hidden summer porch. There are so many wonderful spaces it is sometimes difficult
to decide which one you want to be in!

The property is secluded and safe, with a full time caretaker nearby should you need anything. It is very close to many of the best things the Asheville area offers, such as art studios, galleries and museums, wonderful shopping, incredible restaurants featuring gourmet meals and outdoor dining areas, water sports such as rafting, tubing and kayaking, amazing private hiking trails, hot springs, spas, and some very charming small towns, complete with cafes and antique stores. The house has high speed wireless Internet, and dish-network with hundreds of channels. The library is filled with books, and hundreds of DVDs for your use. This is a very unusual vacation rental,
built over time, lovingly and thoughtfully. You will never want to leave.

Begin your day with a cup of gourmet coffee, sipped in the incredible sun room which overlooks the many ridges of mountains to the south. Wander down to the private tennis court, built by our area's famous Gary Whalen, and drink in the serenity in this natural paradise. Hike on the 5 miles of private trails that meander through the mountains, then soak in the outdoor hot tub, completely private. You will be amazed at the tranquility and quietness, with no sounds of the outer world to disturb you. Drive the short distance to stores, shopping, outdoor cafes, museums, or spend the day lazing in one of the cozy nooks in the home itself. Enjoy the best that the mountains have to offer in this incredible vacation rental, absolutely the finest that the Asheville area has to offer.

The Sunroom:

Offering a magnificent view of the property, the large sunroom has glass all round, six skylights and a series of floor to ceiling windows, all of which can be easily opened at the top and bottom. From here, you can walk onto the terrace wrapping half the house and giving view to a wide expanse of layered mountains. It is the perfect spot to sip your morning coffee. There is a convenient television with satellite here to watch you favorite shows.

The Living Room:

Many multi-paned windows surround the living room. An alcove seating area provides a view of the terrace and the mountains beyond. A large see-through gas fireplace, made of hand-made brick, provides an attractive divider between the dining and living rooms.

Dining Room:

Open to the kitchen and breakfast bar, a bake oven is nestled into the hearth of the floor-to-ceiling hand formed brick fireplace. French doors open to the sunroom and terrace.

The Kitchen:

Spacious and lit brightly with skylights, the kitchen deftly blends the most up to date appliances, like its Wolf Commercial Stove, with wonderful antiques such as an oak walk-in cooler currently being used as a pantry, a sub-zero below-the counter freezer, and an electrified antique 5- door oak ice box built into the cabinets.

The Game Room:

With 14 foot ceilings, a huge port-hole style window, and a tall circle-top window, plus three other windows, there is lots of light here. This room houses the billiards table and home theatre. A large display completes
the dramatic effect of the room.

The Great Room:

Spectacular 35 foot cathedral ceiling with 2 huge, 100 year-old stained glass windows casting light throughout the room. The granite floor is centered by  compass rose. A gleaming broad oak staircase leads to the second floor, where you can look over the great room from a balcony just opposite from the gaming room. A large Rumford-style
wood-burning fireplace makes this a popular gathering place. The hammer-beam and post construction is stunning.

The Rest of the House:

Here is an assortment of various photos taken throughout the different seasons to give you a glimpse of the oasis in the Appalachian mountains.

The Grounds:

There is almost always something in bloom at Laughing Frog. The extensive gardens hold plants for every season. Even winter is quite beautiful. The pond doubles as our swimming hole, but also has many lovely koi, as well as lilies and lotuses. Some summers we let the lotuses proliferate (the frogs and the fish love this!) Other summers we thin the plants, or allow our friends to come get divisions. You can also harvest your own edible lotus root!
